I think skill maps shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all. People have different expertises and shouldn’t be expected to grow in all directions. I think that’s how skill maps can be helpful: as a career development assistance tool focused on the areas that each individual wants to grow. In our team, I use skill mapping in conjunction with 1:1 support, not as a replacement for a personal and tailored approach. A more generic skill map can be used to group up all skill maps and identify some gaps. But at an individual level there’s so much more to consider.
